Elegant Gifting: Wine Box and Book Cover

Two-session Class

Saturday, October 18, 9:00am-3:30pm
$75

How would you like to get a head start on a beautiful handmade box for holiday gift giving? How would you like to make an elegant composition book cover to keep track of tastings to come? Maybe you’ll decide to use the box and journal cover for something completely different! Maybe you’ll want to organize your work space. You’ll learn the skills you need to make a beautiful box and journal cover in this two-day course.

The instructor for this course is Hilarie Rath, certified teacher for Colorway Arts Cartonnage and Bookbinding. Sign up early as there will be restricted enrollment for this class to ensure that students receive proper attention as they work.

Partial supplies are included in the class cost. Students are also asked to bring the following:

  • Two pieces of coordinated cotton fabric, each measuring at least 1/2 yard. Patterns or grunge type fabric work better than solids.

  • a cutting mat, 18”x24” recommended

  • rotary cutter

  • scissors

  • craft knife with snap-off blades

  • 18” ruler

  • weights or two hefty books

  • a lunch on Saturday

Registration will close on Thursday, October 9. Hilarie will contact the participants before class.

A more thorough description of needed supplies is available on the registration page via the Materials and Supply form.

Please know that this is indeed a two day class with the Friday, October 17 class from 5-8pm and the Saturday, October 18 class  from 9am-3:30 pm, even if the registration information contradicts this. Due to a registration technicality, the software will not allow us to record a two day class with a different time schedule.

Many people are familiar with traditional relief printing: an artist carves into wood or linoleum, then inks the surface to create an image. We’ll be bringing the technique into 2024 by creating our carvings with a laser cutter! We’ll use Hands on Deck’s laser engraver and Handmade Papermakers of Green Bay’s paper as modern means of woodblock fine art printing. Students will learn the basics of laser cutter operation, relief printmaking processes, and printmaking tools. Students should bring or email a high-contrast drawing or design to be cut for their personal printing block (measuring approx. 4”x4”). Beverages available for purchase from Paradise North Distillery.

Bookbinding can take many forms, but the best-known in the Western world is the codex. To customize their creations, students can choose to laser engrave their cover!
